Thank you, Mary Beth! That's a really interesting lower railing, I haven't seen anything like it around here. Though the arch theme is pretty prevalent. Your bracket design looks a lot easier to replicate than ours, we might have to simplify to something like that! Ours has a little floral cutout in the middle that would mean a whole lot of jigsawing.
The staircase I am wondering about is interior - we have one set of stairs in the house but they appear to be the old "back stairs" - I can't imagine they were the only set of stairs in the house. They are way too windy and boxed in. We can't figure out where the original main stairwell would have been, and the wood floors didn't give us any hints unfortunately.
